A UK customer-experience leader looking at Sierra in late 2026 is looking at a company that sells enterprise AI agents for every customer channel, the phone included. Sierra's homepage says a single agent can be deployed across chat, SMS, WhatsApp, email, voice and ChatGPT, and that customers pay through outcome-based pricing. Its product overview says 40% of the Fortune 50 partner with Sierra, a vendor-stated figure with no date beside it. That is a strong pitch for a board that wants one AI layer across every channel. It is a different question from the one the person who owns the phone line has to answer: what exactly will this platform do on a live UK call, who decides when a call counts as a success, and what goes into the contract.

This guide is written for the Head of Customer Operations who has Sierra on a shortlist and needs a second option to test against it. It covers how Sierra defines an outcome on a call, what its voice channel includes, how agents are built and changed, what a UK buyer should confirm on data and compliance, when Sierra is the right choice, and when a call platform such as Dilr Voice fits better. It deliberately cedes four things to neighbouring posts. The general mechanics of per-resolution and outcome pricing, and the six clauses to negotiate, live in our voice AI pricing models guide. The broader choice between an omnichannel programme and a voice-first one lives in the omnichannel voice AI strategy post. Funding and valuation signals sit in the vendor valuation guide, and price comparisons sit in the best AI voice agent guide.

This guide is shipped by the team behind Dilr Voice, a multi-agent voice AI platform that chains specialised agents into a single phone call. Or see DATS, our five-stage method for placing AI where the operating numbers move.

What is Sierra, and why are UK teams comparing it in 2026?

Sierra is a conversational AI platform for customer experience, co-founded by Bret Taylor and Clay Bavor. Sierra builds agents that run across voice, chat, messaging, email and ChatGPT, prices largely by outcome, and lists London among its offices. UK teams compare Sierra because it sells one agent for every channel, which forces a phone-line owner to decide whether calls belong on a shared agent or a dedicated platform.

The Sierra about page names its founders and offices, including London, and describes the company as helping businesses build better, more human customer experiences with AI. The product story is breadth. One agent, built once, is deployed to every surface a customer uses. One British reference Sierra publishes is the retailer Next: its customer story says Next implemented a Sierra agent across two use cases in six weeks, handling arrange-return queries, matching customers without order numbers and managing identity verification. The story does not say which channels carry those use cases, so if a phone deployment is your reason for calling the reference, ask that question directly. Questions about Sierra's funding and scale belong in the vendor valuation guide.

For a phone-line owner, that breadth cuts both ways. A shared agent means one set of journeys, one knowledge base and one set of guardrails across chat and calls. It also means the phone line is one channel among six inside a platform whose commercial model, build tools and roadmap were designed for all of them. Deciding whether that is what your calls need is the first job, and it is a question our AI operating model work is designed to answer. The rest of this guide is the evidence you need to make that call yourself.

How does Sierra define an outcome on a phone call?

Sierra defines an outcome per deployment rather than with one universal rule. Its December 2024 pricing post says Sierra agrees clear criteria for each outcome upfront, that escalated cases are in most cases not charged, and that routing or greeter-style interactions may be priced on conversation count instead. A UK buyer should therefore read Sierra's outcome as a negotiated definition, not a fixed product term.

Sierra's first statement of the model is the blog post Outcome-based pricing for AI agents, written by Elliot Greenwald and published on 10 December 2024. It lists resolved conversations, ecommerce purchases and memberships saved as examples of outcome measures, and says that if a conversation is unresolved, in most cases there is no charge. It also concedes the model's limits: for routing or greeter-style interactions, Sierra proposes a blended approach where payment follows conversation count regardless of outcome. On a phone line, that matters, because greeting, identifying and routing the caller is often the first job a voice agent does, and that is exactly the kind of interaction this carve-out describes. A DATS engagement can start by mapping those triage calls.

Sierra returned to the subject on 3 June 2026 in a post titled Outcomemaxxing, again by Elliot Greenwald. Its most useful sentence for a buyer is a condition, not a promise:

"It only works where the software is highly autonomous and highly attributable."

Read that as Sierra's own test for when its pricing model fits your calls. The same post says Sierra is not dogmatic about outcome pricing and does consumption-style work where it fits the shape of the problem. For a phone line, attribution is the hard part. A caller who gets an answer from the agent, then rings back the next day, or completes the task in an app afterwards, is a resolved call on one definition and a repeat contact on another. The point to settle with Sierra is not the rate but the event: what the system logs as an outcome on a call, what it logs as an escalation, and who can audit the difference. Those questions are developed in general form, with negotiation clauses, in our pricing models guide, and the measurement side is in our voice AI ROI framework.

There is a second, quieter point. An outcome-priced vendor is paid when the agent completes a task, which aligns its incentives with containment. That is good for cost and worth watching for caller experience, because the cheapest outcome for both parties is a call that never reaches a person. Write your escalation triggers into the agent design and the contract, so a caller who asks for a human gets one, whatever the billing consequence. Our warm transfer guide sets out what a good handover carries.

What does Sierra's voice channel actually include?

Sierra's voice channel covers inbound and outbound calls, low-latency speech that handles interruptions, background noise and accents, real-time sentiment detection, escalation to people with full context, and voice payments that collect card details by keypad tones on PCI Level 1 infrastructure. Sierra also describes a transcription layer that queries several speech providers in parallel and combines their outputs.

The Sierra voice page describes low-latency voice interactions that handle interruptions, background noise and accents, and detect customer sentiment in real time to adapt tone and pace. It positions the agent as a replacement for rigid IVR menus, and says conversations transition to care representatives with full context and history when a human touch is required. The UK version of the page adds that the agent can connect to all major call centre platforms and a wide array of phone systems and compliance tools, and that transfers carry AI-generated summaries and skills-based routing. "All major call centre platforms" is a marketing phrase, so ask Sierra to name the connector for your specific suite and the features that survive the handover. If you want help writing that connector question, talk to our team.

Two voice features stand out. The first is voice payments: Sierra says it collects card and ACH payments entirely over the phone with no IVR handoff, with card details collected via keypad tones through Level 1 PCI compliant infrastructure and routed directly to your payment processor. ACH is a United States payment rail, so a UK buyer should confirm which UK card and bank payment flows are supported and which processors are integrated. The second is transcription. In a post dated 18 May 2026, Voice AI is only as good as what it hears, Sierra says its ensembler queries multiple transcription providers in parallel, combines their outputs and keeps operating if one provider is unavailable. It reports that on its internal benchmarks ensembling cut utterance error rate by about 25% on average versus the best single provider. That is a vendor-reported result on Sierra's own benchmark, not an independent measurement, and the useful buyer action is to test name, postcode and account-number capture on your own recordings, a test worth repeating after every change, which our AI execution office can run.

Languages need a careful read, because Sierra's pages give different counts for different things:

Sierra pageWhat the page saysWhat it is counting
VoiceSpeak in over 55 languagesVoice conversation languages
Trust and reliability58 languagesVoice, chat, email and more
Product overview59 languagesVoice, chat, email and WhatsApp
Channels60+ localesVoice Personas tuning
Transcription blogOver 70 languages and dialectsSpeech recognition only

None of these is wrong on its own terms; they count different layers. The figure that matters to you is narrower than any of them: the languages your callers actually speak, tested end to end on a phone line, with recognition, reasoning and the synthesised voice all in that language. Ask for that list in the order form rather than a headline count.

How do you build and change a Sierra agent?

Sierra offers three ways to build and change an agent. Ghostwriter builds an agent from operating procedures, transcripts or a plain-English goal. Agent Studio is a no-code workspace with journeys, knowledge, 40+ pre-built integrations, simulations and Voice Sims. The Agent SDK lets developers write journeys as code inside their own release process. Each suits a different team.

The Sierra homepage describes Ghostwriter as an agent-building agent: you upload SOPs, transcripts, whiteboard photos or audio recordings, or explain the goal in plain English, and it builds a multilingual, multichannel agent with built-in guardrails. Agent Studio is the no-code environment, with journeys, agent traces of every decision and tool call, knowledge management, 40+ pre-built integrations, AI-driven simulations, regression testing, and Voice Sims that test transcription, background noise and speaker variation before going live. The Agent SDK is for engineering teams who want to write customer journeys as code, track changes and keep their own development workflows.

For a UK contact centre, the useful question is who will own changes after go-live. If your operations team will adjust journeys weekly, Agent Studio is the relevant surface and you should see it used on your scenarios, not a demo script. If your engineering team will own the agent, the SDK route puts it inside your own change control. Either way, insist on seeing a regression suite run against a set of your own recorded calls before and after a change, because a voice agent that improves on chat can still degrade on the phone. Sierra's product overview also describes an expert agent development team and says you can deploy in weeks; ask how much of your build that team will do, and how much your own people will own, because that split decides your running cost as much as the licence does. Our operating model service exists for exactly that decision.

What should a UK buyer confirm about data and compliance?

A UK buyer should confirm where call recordings, transcripts and model calls are processed, what the Data Processing Addendum says, which certifications Sierra actually holds today, and who carries each calling-rule duty. Sierra's website privacy policy does not cover customer call data, so the contract, not the website, is where those answers live.

Start with scope. Sierra's privacy policy says it does not apply to personal information Sierra processes on behalf of its customers, which it calls Customer Data, and that its obligations for that data are set by customer contracts, including the Data Processing Addendum. The same policy mentions the UK Extension to the EU-US Data Privacy Framework for the transfers it describes, but those are Sierra's own processing activities, not where your calls are handled. Ask for the DPA, the sub-processor list, and a written answer on where recordings, transcripts and model inference run for a UK deployment. The questions are the same ones in our voice AI security questionnaire guide.

Next, read certifications precisely. The Sierra trust page says Sierra is committed to maintaining compliance standards including SOC 2, HIPAA, GDPR, PCI, FedRAMP High, CCPA, CSA STAR, ISO 27001 and ISO 42001, and separately says it holds PCI DSS Level 1 Service Provider certification. "Committed to maintaining" is not the same sentence as "holds"; request the current reports and certificates through Sierra's trust centre rather than relying on the list. The same page describes a constellation of models with automatic switching between LLM providers for continuity, supervisor models that wrap the LLMs, and customer data that is only used as you instruct and never shared with other customers. Multi-provider routing is good for resilience, and it also means more sub-processors in the chain, so confirm which model providers can receive UK call content. Reading vendor claims this way is part of our approach to placing AI inside enterprise systems.

Finally, place the calling-rule duties correctly. If the agent makes outbound marketing calls, the ICO's telephone marketing guidance under the Privacy and Electronic Communications Regulations says that, in general, you must not make marketing calls to numbers listed on the Telephone Preference Service or Corporate TPS unless that person has specifically consented, so call lists need screening. That duty sits with the business making the calls, which is you, not the platform. A platform can make compliance easier with consent capture, screening and permitted-hours controls, but the duty stays with the caller. Our UK and EU voice AI compliance guide sets out how those rules fit together.

When is Sierra the right choice for a UK contact centre?

Sierra is the right choice when you want one agent to serve customers across voice, chat, WhatsApp, email and ChatGPT, when you value outcome-aligned commercial terms and can define outcomes cleanly, and when you need breadth such as voice payments, a no-code studio plus an SDK, and a published compliance list. A large consumer brand with many channels gains most from that breadth.

Be fair to the platform. Sierra's channels page describes messaging across web, app, WhatsApp, Apple Business Chat and SMS, an email agent, Live Assist for human representatives, and publishing the same agent to ChatGPT through Model Context Protocol. If your customers move between those surfaces and you want one set of journeys behind all of them, that is a real advantage a call platform does not offer. Voice payments on PCI Level 1 infrastructure, three build routes and an expert agent development team that Sierra says has supported hundreds of deployments are also things a smaller vendor may not match.

Outcome pricing is a genuine strength where your outcomes are clean. A retailer whose agent processes a return, or a subscription business whose agent saves a cancellation, can attribute the result to the software with little argument. That is the territory Sierra's own Outcomemaxxing post describes as its home quadrant. Where your calls are mostly triage, identity checks and transfers, the blended consumption pricing Sierra describes for greeter-style work may apply instead, and the comparison with other platforms becomes more direct.

Sierra is a weaker fit when the phone line is the whole job. If you need an outbound programme with UK calling-window and screening controls, telephony on your own carrier account, a small team that wants a free trial before a sales cycle, or a platform scoped to calls rather than every channel, a dedicated call platform is worth testing alongside it. The Parloa alternative guide explains what a customer-service suite owns that a call platform does not, and the orchestration versus platform guide explains how much of the stack each route leaves you to run.

How does Dilr Voice differ from Sierra for UK phone work?

Dilr Voice is an enterprise voice AI platform from DILR.AI built for the phone line. It chains specialised agents into a single call, ships per-country compliance rules by default, runs outbound campaigns with scheduling windows and retry logic, and runs telephony on the customer's Twilio or Vobiz account. Sierra spans more channels and payments; Dilr Voice is narrower and call-specific.

The difference is scope rather than quality, and the table below keeps to what each vendor publishes. The Sierra column comes from Sierra's pages linked above; the Dilr Voice column comes from DILR's published Dilr Voice product page and FAQ.

On the phone itself, each Dilr Voice agent has its own prompt, model and tools, and passes context to the next on handover, so a greeter can hand to a qualifier and then to a customer-care or action agent inside one call. Inbound work covers business-hours configuration, after-hours routing and warm transfer to a human with full context. Responses arrive in under 500 milliseconds on DILR's own on-platform measurement. After the call, CRM records, email, SMS and Slack notifications and lead updates run without code, with HubSpot, Salesforce and Google Calendar named as live integrations. Knowledge bases are built from your uploaded documents, chunked automatically and searched during live calls, so the agent cites your own material.

On data, Dilr Voice is hosted on Google Cloud Platform, encrypted at rest and in transit, with dedicated tenancy and regional data residency options for enterprise customers, and a platform API for agents, campaigns, leads, knowledge bases and call data. The honest limit is scope. The Dilr Voice product page lists no chat, email or WhatsApp channel, no payments by phone and no ChatGPT publishing. If those matter as much as the phone line, Sierra covers ground Dilr Voice does not. If the phone line is the job, you can try Dilr Voice on your own scenarios before any sales conversation, and our DATS engagement can run both platforms against the same test set.

What is the best Sierra alternative for UK teams in 2026?

The best Sierra alternative for a UK team depends on why Sierra is on the list. For one agent across many channels, compare other customer-service AI suites such as Parloa or NiCE Cognigy. For the phone line alone, compare platforms built for calls, such as Dilr Voice or PolyAI. Whichever list you build, test every option on your own recorded calls.

There is no single winner, and any vendor that claims to be one is skipping the criteria. Sort the shortlist by the job first. If the brief is a shared agent across channels, the comparison is with other suites; our Cognigy alternative guide and Parloa alternative guide cover two of them. If the brief is calls, the comparison is with platforms built for the phone; the PolyAI alternative guide covers another voice-focused option, and the enterprise voice AI agents guide covers the category as a whole.

Then apply four criteria to every vendor, Sierra included. First, can the vendor state, in one sentence you could put in a contract, what it counts as a successful call and an escalation? Second, does the agent handle your callers' names, postcodes and account numbers on your own recordings, in the languages your callers speak? Third, will the vendor tell you in writing where UK call recordings, transcripts and model calls are processed, and who the sub-processors are? Fourth, who owns changes after go-live, and can you see a regression run before a change ships? A vendor that answers all four clearly is worth a pilot. Price comparisons for the main platforms live in our best AI voice agent guide, and if you want help structuring the test, talk to our team.

Does Sierra charge when a call is escalated to a person?

Sierra's December 2024 pricing post says that if a case needs to be escalated, in most cases there is no charge, and that outcome criteria are agreed upfront. The phrase "in most cases" means the escalation rule is part of your negotiated definition, so a UK buyer should write the escalation event and its billing treatment into the order form.

Ask for a worked example on your own call types: a call the agent resolves, a call it transfers after verifying identity, a call it transfers immediately, and a caller who rings back within a day. How each is logged and billed tells you more than any headline description. Our AI execution office can run this kind of reconciliation once a platform is live.

Which languages does Sierra support on voice calls?

Sierra's voice page says its agents speak in over 55 languages, with mid-conversation language switching, while other Sierra pages give 58, 59, 60+ locales and over 70 for transcription alone, because each counts a different layer. A UK buyer should ask Sierra for the specific languages supported end to end on a phone call and test the ones its callers use.

For comparison, Dilr Voice supports 30+ languages. A shorter list that covers your callers is worth more than a longer one that does not, so test the languages that matter on real audio before comparing counts. About Dilr.ai explains who builds the platform, and our approach explains how we place AI inside enterprise systems.
